Diving in Florida: The Keys

If you’re planning on scuba diving in Florida the first thing you will realize is that you are spoilt for choice.

Experienced people will know that one of the best known spots in the world for scuba diving is the “Florida Keys”.

The main resort here is Key Largo and this area has long been known as “The Scuba Diving Capital of the World”.

Key Largo received its accolade because of the vast choice of dive sites and the different types of dive sites. For instance, if you travel to Key Largo scuba diving you will discover that there are caves, coral reefs and wrecks to explore.

The reefs range from small and pretty to large and deep so there is something for everyone. Some of the wrecks are nothing short of spectacular. The USS Spiegel Grove was the largest ship ever deliberately sunk off the coast of Florida and takes numerous dives to fully explore.

Although Islamorada and Marathon can also provide some excellent diving in Florida the other major area in this region of Florida is Key West.

Key West provides a more all round experience. By that I mean this is plenty to do and see out of the water as well as in the water. This colonial place has some of the most outstanding nightlife you are likely to experience in Florida. The whole place comes to life at night with street entertainment and one of the highlights is watching the famous sunsets.

All of “The Keys” have long been known as a popular destination for any serious scuba diver but Florida has so much more to offer.

Diving in Florida: Miami

Travel up the eastern coast of Florida and not far from “The Keys” is Miami. Now Miami has long been known for its culture and places such as South Beach with its Art Deco, shops and cafés, but it has also been developing its artificial reef program and has some of the most unique dives you are likely to encounter.

There are not many places in the world you can scuba dive Army Tanks or how about a visit to the underwater bar! The Jose Cuervo Bar is located not far from the beach and you will find it frequented by fish, scuba divers and snorkelers.

If you are thinking of scuba diving in Florida then Miami is a great alternative to “The Keys” with a great choice of dive sites including some unique dives of interest such as Army Tanks and of course when you are not in the water there is just so much to see and do.

Diving in Florida: Fort Lauderdale

Travelling north up the Atlantic coast and another favorite place to scuba dive in Florida is Fort Lauderdale. With its vast waterways this lovely place is known as “The Venice of America” and when you see the waterways full of boats and cruisers it’s easy to see why.
As with many of the lesser known diving areas Fort Lauderdale has some interesting dive sites and plenty of wrecks to be explored by both experienced and novice divers.

Diving in Florida: West Palm Beach

Similarly if you travel further up the coast, another great place for diving in Florida has to be West Palm Beach. This is one Florida scuba diving area that has gone out of its way to provide and continually expand its artificial reefs program.

Take Governor’s River Walk Reef. This reef system was created with the sinking of three ships making it a very exciting place to explore.  West Palm Beach is proud of its artificial reef program and like many other places around Florida it continues to invest and expand the number of scuba diving sites available off the coast of Florida.
